Our talented tutorial and Sencha Touch guru Drew Neil is back with a 10 minute screencast to explain Layouts in Sencha Touch 2.

If you’ve never watch one of Drew’s screencasts, you’re missing out. He has a clear, concise way of explaining and demonstrating the process of developing in Sencha Touch. Watch this video introducing you to layouts and I guarantee you’ll come away with a better understanding.

In Sencha Touch, the Component and Container form the basic building blocks for creating an interface. Each container can be assigned a Layout which handles the positioning of its inner items. The layouts work either by neatly arranging components to use the available space, or by showing just one component at a time and providing some way of changing the focus between them.

In this tutorial, we’ll see each different layout type in action and see how they can be combined in any manner you can think of.

This week we were excited to announce the release of Sencha Animator.

Sencha Animator is a desktop application for Mac, Windows, and Linux that allows you to create CSS3 Animations for WebKit browsers with ease. With Animator you drag and drop assets onto the stage, then start manipulating how their CSS properties change over time. Animator has full scene support, and you can even attach JavaScript handlers to objects on the stage to jump between scenes.

Be sure to check out the demos to see what has already been created with Sencha Animator, such as this amazing KickFu iPhone game, or the Museum of Science interactive ad.

You can try it out free for 30-days, so give it a go! Download Sencha Animator and see how easy it is to create something amazing today.

Sencha Touch 1.0 RC1

We’re proud to release the first Release Candidate of Sencha Touch, the most innovative product we’ve ever created. We’re enormously grateful for the amazing response it has received, as well as the phenomenal participation from the Sencha community in testing it with us.

RC1 signifies an API and feature freeze. All effort is now focused on polishing the product by fixing bugs and improving documentation. We are rapidly closing down the list of open issues and expect to release version 1.0 shortly.

For more information on what’s new and improved in this release, read the blog post or take a look at the release notes.

To see what others are creating with our mobile web app framework, check out the Sencha Touch App Contest page where we’re showcasing the Top 10 apps plus 12 runners up! We will announce 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners at Sencha Conference on November 15th.

We’d like to extend a warm welcome to one of our newest additions to the Sencha Touch team, Jacky Nguyen. He is the creator of MooTouch (now part of Sencha Labs) and joins us from Singapore.

Jacky is already an outstanding contributor to Sencha Touch, and has put in countless hours squashing bugs as we prepare for 1.0 launch.
